The ohmic test is a generic term used by Renobat ® for state electrical measurements. It can be broken down into impedance and conductance derived from an AC signal technique, or in internal resistance derived from a DC Technique. A battery, however, has a complex, non-linear electrochemical element and several factors will affect reading, including the frequency, amplitude of the test signal, and resolution of the measuring DEVICE. This means that the readings acquired by a technique may not correlate with the readings acquired by Another. Consistency in both equipment and test procedure is essential throughout the life of a battery.
When the data is acquired in a correct and systematic way, it has been shown that the internal resistance has a strong correlation with capacity and, while not a direct measure of capacity, it can be used as a measure of the state to predict the performance of the battery in a discharge.
A myriad of tests have shown that this correlation between internal resistance and capacity allows the ohmic test to be used as an indicator of the state of a battery. Almost all individual cell anomalies or failures can be identified from internal resistance (RI) Measurements.
