More than 600 million of lead-acid batteries were produced at 2012. And if this number were to be replaced by lithium-ion batteries, it would take 90,000 tons of lithium-although there are abundant lithium reserves, the current total global production is 37,000 tonnes. of which less than 10,000 tonnes of lithium are used for automobiles.

Most lithium is found in South America, in Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. and Dr. Davidson highlighted the inherent risk of having a resource that is only available in a specific region.

For example, any concerns or instability of Governments in these regions could greatly affect the supply of lithium. And thus have an impact on the price of the battery, and also on the cost of the vehicle.
